About
Welcome to my world!
And what a world it is! Growing up in Baltimore in the 60s, girls were expected to limit their futures to teaching, nursing, marriage, and living in the suburbs. The “cool” stuff was for guys.
But there’s a streak of rebel in me. When we were asked what we wanted to be when we grew up, I said I wanted to fly a plane. Everyone laughed. I said I wanted to go to Australia. Everyone laughed. I said I wanted to be a writer. Everyone laughed. I said I wanted to leave Baltimore and see the rest of the world. Everyone laughed. I said I wanted to have a horse. Everyone laughed.
I have my pilot’s license and own a plane. Two horses. More published articles than I can count and four books. Lived in Europe; became a travel writer. Flew across Queensland, Australia. Rode a camel in Morocco and explored cliff dwellings in New Mexico.
With over 30 years of writing experience, there are few projects I haven’t handled. I’ve written about everything from the Kentucky Derby to a school for butlers; a retiree who started an oyster farm on the Chesapeake Bay to an analysis of a dam collapse in the UK; a company that designs garden mazes for British estates to the final flight of the F-111 fighter\bomber.
As a mentor and writing coach, I conduct interactive workshops on expanding creativity, improving storytelling, and developing research skills for writers’ groups, senior continuing education programs, and after-school projects.
My other passions are travel and horses. I lived in England for many years and took advantage of that to visit and write about Europe, Morocco, and Scandinavia. Back in the US, I relish discovering the places and people that make this country so endlessly fascinating.
With four books and dozens of articles about riding and riders, it’s fair to tag me as a crazy horse lady. I regularly give presentations at equine expos about all aspects of the equine world.
Please browse my site. My favorite stories are under Articles. You can learn more about my horse books and purchase them from the Books tab. Descriptions of my seminars and workshops are on the Seminars and Workshops page. That’s also where you can check out my upcoming schedule and where I’ve been in the past.
"Fran has a fantastic writing style and understanding of the needs of tourists looking for their next locally flavored adventure. She is very warm and easy to work with. I look forward to working with her more in the future!"
